What needs to change?

Every 10 seconds two people develop diabetes, and one person dies from diabetes related complications. Diabetes is among the leading cause of death across the globe. Diabetes currently affects 250 million people worldwide; this is expected to grow to 380 million by 2025. The largest increase in diabetes prevalence is taking place in developing countries. In 2007, diabetes treatment and lost productivity cost the US economy alone $174 billion.

The reality is that it doesn’t have to be this way. The number of people suffering from type 2 diabetes could be reduced by 80% with just a slight improvement to diet and exercise.

Existing healthcare infrastructures are in danger of collapsing under the escalating pressures brought on by this fast growing diabetes pandemic. It isn’t only about those who have diabetes, it’s about society and the strain the diabetes pandemic is putting on resources worldwide.

It’s about the future. Not just ours, but that of generations to come.
